The March 2011 issue of Jazzwise is out today, and I heartily recommend you pick up a copy, not least for the cover feature on Kurt Elling which includes portions of an interview I did with Jon Hendricks back in November (right, with yours truly).
Phrases like “the best male jazz singer in the world” get bandied around with reference to Elling, and although I find that an odd way to talk about a musician (singing isn’t an Olympic sport, after all) you’d struggle to find a more complete jazz vocalist. His astounding technique and range is rightly admired but it’s matched by amazing feel, creativity and attitude. It’s probably fair to say, though, that there would be no Elling without Hendricks. I asked the master what he thinks of the student, and his response is in the magazine.
Here they are singing together on a great version of the Basie blues Goin’ To Chicago.
